Monsters of FolkArtist: Monsters of Folk

Hails from: Omaha, NE

Musical Style: Indie, Folk, Classic Rock

For Fans of: Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket, Wilco

WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK THEM OUT:
Monsters of Folk are the latest supergroup consisting of consisting of Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward.  This talented group of songsmiths venture deep into their influences on their dynamic debut album. The rotating front men trade off like a team of professors giving lessons on the history of American music; although they make sure to include their own modern touches. If you’re looking for some familiar yet forward sounds, handled by a group of young legends, then get this record spinning.

BACKGROUND CHECK:
This all-star crew got their start in 2004 after they began playing together both on stage and behind the scenes. After five years of collaboration while simultaneously working with their own bands, the group went public with their debut self-titled album released in September 2009.  All three acts represented in Monsters of Folk have rolled out so many hits in the last decade that they can easily be considered as some of the brightest stars of contemporary rock and folk music. The amazing song-writing and stunning playing abilities of this quartet are understood when you listen to some of their well received records like, My Morning Jacket’s Z, Bright Eyes’ Lifted or M. Ward’s Post-War.

With Monsters of Folk, you want to check out “Say Please,” a tune that plays like an instant classic. It’s superb guitar solo and catchy, group-sung chorus will have you joining in the jam from wherever you’re listening. Other highlights on the album are “Ahead of the Curve,” a sentimental acoustic song led by the talented Oberst and “The Right Place” a ragtimey number led by Jim James

The XX

|

The XXArtist: The XX

Hails from: London

Musical style: Pop/Rock, Indie Rock, Alternative

For fans of: Portishead, Mazzy Star, Hot Chip

Why You Should Check Them Out:

The xx is a band that you reflexively want to dislike based solely on age: the group formed just last year, when its four members were still in high school. Yet this quartet of English indie rockers is quickly winning listeners and critics over with an excellent debut that has catapulted them to the top of early year-end best-of lists.

Background Check:

The xx manages to pull off something rare on their 2009-released debut: coalesce their disparate influences – pop, indie rock, electronica – into a cohesive whole that is neither derivative nor over-the-top. The music is understated and pared-down, filled with groovy bass lines and reverb-y guitar leads coupled with exceptional and complementary boy/girl vocals.

The group combines traditional elements like drums, bass, keys, guitars and voices in both familiar and new ways to deliver a languid, dreamy album that digs into your brain with each successive listen. Add in a few programmed beats and some tasteful percussion and the resulting artifact is a moody, often pensive group of modern love songs that incorporates the best bits of great bands like The Cocteau Twins, Love and Rockets, and Yo La Tengo.

The xx is currently on a world-wide tour that will span the next several months. Here’s hoping they will be able to maintain momentum and come out the other side with a batch of brand new songs to lay on us.

School of Seven Bells

|

School of Seven BallsArtist: School of Seven Bells

Hails from: Brooklyn, NY

Musical Style: Electronic, Pop, Psychedelic

For Fans of: Secret Machines, Blodne Redhead, Cocteau Twins

Why you should check them out:

School of Seven Bells is a chameleonic tapestry of darkly themed, futuristic electro pop. The trio helms otherworldly beats and fantastical melodies to create a distinct and mysterious mythos all their own.

Background check:

Guitarist Ben Curtis first met the Deheza twins, Claudia and Alejandra, while all three were on tour, Curtis in the Secret Machines, the sisters in On! Air! Library!  After a late night program about the mythical School of Seven Bells pickpocket academy in South America, the name inspired Curtis and the Deheza’s to eventually drop their current projects and hole up in a shared space to pursue SVIIB full time. After touring with Blonde Redhead and releasing the single “My Cabal” the trio came out with their acclaimed debut LP, Alpinisms, in 2008.

The music of SVIIB is a soaring assortment of Curtis’ understated shoegaze effects rooting the Deheza sisters’ electronic indie pop. The trio have an unusual writing process that begins with lyrics and is formed around the themes singer Alejandra conjures up. Often cryptic to outsiders, the group insists their songs are not mysteries to be solved, but rather to be simply experienced. And, indeed Alpinisms is like an album from a foreign world, often a swirling myriad of moods and states of mind. The group can keep things vibrant while the sweetly harmonized vocals swell and break against the music in a dramatic fashion, and  tone down the tempo to realize a more Eastern approach to songwriting without ever becoming the new age cliche.

As a group, SVIIB is completely different from what the members were pursuing before, yet this incantation serves the three perfectly. The Deheza’s sound like they were made for this kind of lush, dreamy pop, and the guitars and effects provided by Curtis are pitch perfect. All together, School of Seven Bells is a sprawling and hypnotic journey into a dream world of the highest caliber.
